Edie Hooton, candidate for CU Regent. A principled leader who will fight for affordable in-state tuition, higher graduation rates for first generation students, and any attacks from the federal government on academic freedom.

Proven CU Champion.

Prinicipled fighter.

A leader who gets things done.

A champion for higher education

This is a perilous time for higher education. Trump is attacking academic freedom and cutting research funds. The cost of living is too high for Colorado families, making tuition even less affordable. This year, the State is facing another massive deficit. It’s going to hit students and their families even harder.

As a state legislator from Boulder, I fought for higher education funding and greater affordability for Colorado’s students. That’s why CU awarded me “State Legislator of the Year.” As a Regent, I’ll continue the fight to protect higher education funding, academic freedom and university autonomy from a Trump Administration already attacking Colorado.

I will fight to make CU more affordable and to improve our graduation and retention rates. Too many Colorado students can’t afford to attend college or graduate with significant debt. We are failing first-generation students. 45 percent are slipping through the cracks. They’re left with heavy debt and no degree. These students deserve effective retention strategies.

Endorsements

Over 60 elected local Democratic leaders we trust have vetted this race, and they trust Edie. These Mayors, Legislators, Commissioners, and City Council members know what CU needs at this perilous moment.

A principled fighter

A clear glass award with engraved text, placed on a wooden surface. It reads: 'University of Colorado, Boulder | Colorado Springs | Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus. Recognizing Edie Hooton, 2017 Legislator of the Year. September 9, 2017.'

CU students and employees need leaders who will fight for them—and win.

We need collective bargaining for CU workers. Colorado is the only blue state in the nation without it. I have a 97% rating from the AFL-CIO, and will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with labor as a Regent.

We must end CU’s contract with Key Lime Air. The charter service flies CU athletic teams to out of state game, but last year took on ICE as a client. Doing business with a company that shackles immigrants on flights is reprehensible and immoral.

As a legislator, I took on tough corporate foes like private equity, health insurers, and Xcel Energy to protect tenants and consumers. I’ll bring the same energy on behalf of student and families to the CU Regents.

A leader who gets things done

Governing on the Regent’s nine member board is a team sport, not a courtroom theater. It takes a collaborative leader who builds relationships to turn promises into action. I’ve passed laws on affordability issues like protecting mobile homeowners from eviction and empowering our Attorney General to protect renters. I’ll bring the same approach to Regent to make CU more affordable and accessible.

Regents need to lead with the purpose, collaboration and compassion that we’re missing from Washington D.C. today.
